"The happiest day of my life occurred when I found out that I was dyslexic." --Ennis Cosby
... Ennis encouraged others to celebrate their gifts and recognize their learning disabilities so they could to develop their full potential. Acknowledgment of having a learning difference like Dyslexia can be considered a gift because it helps to give understanding to one as style of thinking and how best it is for them to learn.
The Students with Disabilities and Friends (SDF) of Sonoma State University (SSU) will present speaker Russell Cosby of the Hello/Friends Ennis Cosby Foundation on May 1, 2002 at SSU in Cooperage Hall, 7 PM . Mr. Cosby is an uncle of the late Ennis Cosby and the brother of Bill Cosby.
For the past few years, an increasing number of students with learning disabilities have been graduating high school, bypassing junior colleges (where more services may be available), and going directly into four year colleges and universities. Some may be fortunate enough to go to special schools to prepare them for college. A large percentage of these LD students will not complete their studies or will face many difficulties because there is little help at the four-year level. This is a universal problem that needs to be understood and addressed more fully.
Family and friends of Ennis Cosby maintain his namesake foundation to continue the work he started. Ennis was dyslexic and considered it a gift. His first awareness of his learning difference was while attending college. He was a teacher who encouraged others to celebrate their gifts and recognize their learning disabilities, so they could to develop their full potential. Ennis Cosby encouraged his Uncle Russell to get an LD assessment, because he also had learning difficulties in school. Russell is dyslexic and today is a college student in pursuit of his educational goals.
Russell Cosby and the Foundation's Educational Director, Carolyn Oliver, increase public awareness by speaking to parents, teachers, administrators and students with LD around the country. During these engagements, Russell shares his life experiences and discusses the foundation's mission of teaching others how to help those with learning difficulties, so they can reach their goals for a successful quality education. These goals are fully supported by our organization, SDF, and are the inspiration behind this event.
