Community Service

Lambda Theta Nu Sorority, Inc. is strongly dedicated to giving back to the Latino Community. Each chapter participates in at least six Community Service activities each year. Among them are the Latina Youth Leadership Conference and the Lambda Valentine Sales, both of which are done by all chapters on a national level. Individually, each chapter also participates in other community service activities on their own. Upsilon Chapter at sonoma State University has volunteered for several years at the Graton Day Labor Center and has participated in walks to raise money for breast cancer and multiple sclerosis research, among others. Below is a more detailed description of several of our community service activities.
If you would like to join us in our efforts to give back to the community, you may contact our Community Service Chair at ssulambdas@yahoo.com.

Latina Youth Leadership Conference

Every chapter of Lambda Theta Nu Sorority, Inc., holds an annual Latina Youth Leadership Conference at their respective campuses. The purpose of this event is to bring junior high and high school students to a university campus and encourage them to pursue a college education. Workshops are held that encourage self-esteem, respect, cultural awareness, as well as a workshop where they are informed of the requirements for being admitted into a university.

Lambda Valentine Sales

As an organization dedicated towards community service, every February we do a fundraiser on a national level for a certain non-profit organization dedicated towards promoting literacy in the Latino community. We choose an organization that is located near the area where we hold our annual National Convention, where we present to the chosen organization all of the money we have raised.

For 2005, we are pleased to announce that we have chosen CAMINO NUEVO CHARTER ACADEMY as the recipient organization for this year's Lambda Valentine Sales, which totaled over $7,000 on a national level.
Camino Nuevo Charter Academy, whose motto is "leveling the educational field for our students", was founded in August 2000 and is located in the MacArthur Park neighborhood, one of the poorest and most densely populated neighborhoods in Los Angeles. Most of the residents in this neighborhood are immigrants from Mexico and Central America. Their mission is to educate students in a college preparatory program to be literate, critical thinkers and independent problem solvers who are agents of social justice with sensitivity toward the world around them. As the academy is a non-profit, self-funded organization, our purpose in raising this money for their organization will be to help them establish a library in their school and promote Latino literacy through our efforts.

Graton Day Labor Center

Since 2002, we have been volunteering for the Graton Day Labor Center in the small town of Graton, CA. Every Saturday morning during the school year, we would give the Latino migrant day-laborers English tutoring. Many of these laborers do not speak a word of English as they have recently arrived from Mexico and other Latin American countries. The Graton Day Labor Center is composed of volunteers from the community and their goal is to build a center where the workers can get a job in an organized fashion, instead of standing outside in the street waiting for someone to offer them a job. They gather in a local restaurant on Saturday mornings to hold meetings with the volunteers and for the English tutoring.
