Sonoma State Rowing was formed in the year 2003 by interested students and the first coach of the team, Mark Niemann. While only five years old, the team has grown steadily since it was founded. Today, it is composed of four total squads, the varsity men and women, and novice men and women. The team also supports a lightweight program, and has sent three of its members to development camps on the east coast. The program has claimed multiple wins and high finishes, notably including a WIRA championship in the women’s division II/III/club varsity eight in 2005. This year’s squad has already turned in fall wins in the men’s novice eight and varsity lightweight four, as well as placing in the women’s novice eight, men’s novice four, and men’s novice lightweight four. The squad is currently preparing for the spring championship season and will look for multiple WIRA titles this year. |
