SSU Beats #13 Arizona and Advances to Quarterfinal Game vs. #12 Stanford

May 8, 2001 • St. Louis, MO - The #4 Sonoma State lacrosse team beat #13 Arizona for the second time in two weeks as the Cossacks advance to the quarterfinal round of the USLIA National Championship tournament. The Laxcats were unable to contain SSU's attack as Will Burson (7g,1a), John Minan (3g,1a), and Brett Flynn (2g,1a) scored 12 of Sonoma's 16 goals. The same trio lit up Arizona for 12 goals in SSU's impressive win over Arizona at the WCLL Final Four tournament, as well.

Jumping out to a 4-1 lead at the end of the first quarter and a commanding 9-3 lead at halftime, the Cossacks let down on defense during the third quarter, letting in 5, but held Arizona to only 2 goals in the fourth. It is only the second time this season that SSU has allowed an opponent to score ten or more goals.

SSU will play #12 Stanford tomorrow at 12:30 pm EDT. Stanford surprised #5 Simon Fraser 20-11 earlier today and will try to avenge their 13-8 regular season loss to the Cossacks back on April 7th.
