Sonoma Wins 2001 WCLL
Title
April 29, 2001 Davis, CA - Playing in its
third consecutive WCLL final, the Sonoma State lacrosse team beat UC
Santa Barbara 10-7 to win the Western Collegiate Lacrosse League
Championship on Sunday. In an up then down game, the Cossacks were
leading 7-0 at half time but only led by three goals at the end of
the third quarter as a scrappy Santa Barbara team turned up the heat
on the Sonoma defense, scoring five goals to SSU's one in the
process. UCSB fought for every ground ball and took advantage of
several power play opportunities to get within striking distance, but
seven goals was too much to overcome. The Cossacks settled down in
the fourth quarter to seal the victory as both teams scored a pair
each. Sonoma's goalie and Tournament MVP, Dominic Gomez, made 16
saves and Brett Flynn scored four goals in the winning effort. It is
Sonoma's first WCLL title.
