March 22, 2001 - On March 21st, Sonoma State University Lacrosse was ranked #1 in the USLIA Top 25 Poll. By beating Cal this past weekend who beat then #1 BYU the weekend before, the Cossacks moved up four spots from #5, the ranking SSU has had since the pre-season. SSU won't enjoy the title for long before having to defend it against #2 Michigan, who the Cossacks play tomorrow night in Ann Arbor.
SSU was ranked #2 in the USLIA at the beginning of last season until the Cossacks knocked off then #1 Colorado State. SSU enjoyed the top spot for the rest of the regular season but fell to #2 again after losing to Cal in the WCLL Finals. SSU finished 3rd at the 2000 USLIA National Championship, losing to eventual champion BYU and beating Cal in the third-place game.
This weekend in Ann Arbor the Cossacks will face #2 Michigan, #5 Colorado State, and #16 Texas. Currently, Sonoma State University is 5-0 with wins over #3 UC Berkeley, #7 Virginia Tech, #11 UC Santa Barbara, #24 Cal Poly SLO, and unranked Santa Clara University.
