April 18, 2000 - With Sunday's 21-7 victory over division rival Chico State, the Sonoma State lacrosse team finished the 2000 regular season with a perfect record of 13-0. The last time SSU finished with a perfect regular season was in 1996. Coincidentally, the last time SSU and Chico met was also in 1996 when SSU routed the Wildcats 25-0.
With revenge in mind, Chico played a very physical game in an effort to rattle the Cossacks. While Chico won the hitting battle with some monster hits during the course of play, the game's outcome was never in doubt as SSU opened with a 6-0 first quarter lead and ran the score to 12-0 by halftime.
In the second half, Chico finally put an end to Sonoma's streak of unanswered goals by opening with a goal 5:28 into the quarter. For the remainder of the game, Sonoma and Chico played an even 3-3 third quarter and a close 6-4 fourth. The game ball was awarded to Mike Fritz who scored a hat-trick in the first 20 minutes of the game.
