SSU Beats Davis 11-4 Despite 14 Penalties

April 5, 2000 - Despite 14 Penalties that resulted in 10:30 minutes of man-down defense for the Cossacks, Sonoma State was able to hold UC Davis to only one extra-man goal and pull out a 11-4 win. SSU started with a high pressure offense that resulted in 12 shots but only 3 goals to finish the first quarter with a 3-1 lead. In the second quarter, Davis switched to an ineffective zone defense that allowed the Cossacks to notch five more goals and go into the halftime break with a comfortable 8-2 lead. In the third quarter, Davis played a ball-control offense that slowed the Cossack scoring to only two goals in the period, but a commanding 10-2 lead. The fourth quarter represented SSU's worse of the season as the Cossacks rolled up 5:30 minutes of box time on six penalties. In addition, the Cossacks were only able to squeeze off three shots the entire quarter. Without question, Sonoma State will have to play with more discipline if it hopes to keep up with the powerful UCSB team this Saturday. Wednesday's game ball went to M.J. Crickmore who was one of the few bright spots on the field, playing tenacious defense, effective transition, and scoring 4 goals.
