SSU Falls to #12 Stanford 7-4 in USLIA Quarterfinal Play

May 9, 2001 • St. Louis, MO - Sonoma State University's quest for a 2001 national title came to an end this afternoon as the Cossacks fell to the Stanford Cardinal 7-4 in quarterfinal play. Stanford used an air-tight defense to keep SSU scoreless in the first half and never let the Cossacks closer than two goals.

Stanford coach Pete Bijesse noted that "our defense played outstanding today. We kept our checks on their hands all game long. The got very few open shots. Nothing was uncontested this afternoon. Sonoma's defense played well too, but our defense came through when it counted. It's the first time in almost 10 years we have beaten Sonoma State. Big win for our program."

SSU faces Michigan, who was upset by UC Santa Barbara 6-7, tomorrow at 12:30 pm EDT. The best the Cossacks can finish is 5th.
