March 26, 2001 - The highly anticipated war between #1 Sonoma State and #2 Michigan on Friday night in Ann Arbor was anything but as the Wolverines beat the Cossacks 17-8. At first glance, the loss may have been followed by an asterisk due to the fact that the Cossacks were playing with borrowed sticks but Michigan dominated the game in such a way that it left little doubt which team was number one on that day.
When SSU arrived in Detroit on Thursday, the airline had lost a couple of the team's bags including the team's stick bag. Unable to recover the bags until after the game on Friday, Sonoma State was forced to buy and borrow new sticks for the game. On game day, Coach Carl drove to the Warrior factory in nearby Troy, MI to purchase two dozen sticks and Michigan's Head Coach John Paul was kind enough to lend the Cossacks another dozen sticks prior to the game. However, by all accounts, the Sonoma loss had little to do with equipment and everything to do with an outstanding effort by the Wolverines.
With the Cossacks trailing 6-1 at the end of the first quarter and down 13-3 at halftime, the game was over soon after it started. Michigan let up in the second half as both teams scored four more times to finish with a final of 17-8. The game was characterized by numerous Sonoma penalties and a precision Wolverine offense that took advantage of the Sonoma slide package, setting up Michigan attackman Jeff Hadwin to score 8 times during the game.
With their own sticks in hand, the Cossacks bounced back on Saturday against #16 Texas as Sonoma cruised to an 18-5 victory over the Longhorns.
With a renewed confidence, the Cossacks faced #5 Colorado State on Sunday. Colorado State beat Michigan on Saturday 11-8, so the Cossacks had a chance to save face from their humiliating loss on Friday. In a defensive battle, the Cossacks were unable to overcome the Rams and notched their second loss of the season 8-6.
The Cossacks look to rebound against Division rivals Chico State and UC Davis this weekend. SSU plays in Chico on Saturday at 1:00 pm and at Davis on Sunday, also at 1:00 pm.
