Friendship Games FAQ

What is Friendship Games?

Friendship Games is a gathering for all Filipino-American student organizations in the CSU and UC systems (as well as other schools) to show spirit, pride, unity, and friendship. It usually takes place at Cal State Fullerton, unless otherwise noted.

When does it take place?

It almost always happens in the middle of October--either the second or third weekend of the month--from a Friday through Sunday. The actual games themselves take place on that Saturday.

What is expected to take place during that weekend?

The following outline is an overview of your weekend at FG. For those of you who are working, don't forget to tell your supervisor that you will be gone!

Friday

  • Arrive at the designated meeting area before departing Rohnert Park.
  • Begin road trip in rental vans. At least two stops will be made to refuel vehicles, take bathroom breaks, lunch, etc.
  • Arrive at hotel and check in.

Saturday

  • Leave hotel rooms before dawn breaks! This is to ensure that we can register our school early and perform our skit at the beginning of the event. With over 30 schools performing, it has been decided in the past that it is best to have it done early. We set up with the other schools on Fullerton's soccer field.
  • Competition. This is where the bulk of Friendship Games takes place, as this will take up most of the morning and afternoon.
  • Return to hotel and rooms to prepare for the afterparty.
  • Attend the afterparty and awards ceremony.

Sunday

  • Pack bags, check out of hotel rooms, and drive back to Rohnert Park.
  • Stop along the way to shop and eat.
  • Arrive in Rohnert Park by nightfall and return to our normal lives.

Skits? Competition?

Every school that participates in Friendship Games is invited to perform a roll call dance. Cal State Fullerton will ask each school to act out a one-minute routine on-stage. After all schools are done, the festivities begin. Below are the five relay picnic games Friendship Games features:

The Nasty

Can you dart across a soccer field with a metal rod between your legs AND be able to transfer it to your partner's legs (waiting for you at the end of the field) before the other schools do?

The Conveyer Belt

On that same soccer field, a package in the form of a (preferably lightweight) club member will traverse the dirty terrain, using only his or her friends as means of getting across! Those with allergies ought to take their medication before taking part in this one. No joke.

Tidal Wave

This is the classic of the "spirit-week" type of games, where a bucket (full of holes) is filled with water and is transferred over a line of friends with a solid container waiting at the end. The school that retains the most water at the end wins the match.

RECOMMENDED: Don't forget to bring a dry set of clothing on that day before you participate in this one. A towel helps, too.

Alpine Green

A team of students race across the field with their feet tethered to a set of "skiis." They're really nothing more than a pair of long wooden slabs with straps on each one. This game requires a lot of coordinated work on the team players.

The Groundhog

Friendship Games' greatest challenge. A single-file line of students form a "tunnel" with their legs while their friends race against other schools by moving as quicky as they can through the tunnel.

So this is worth my time, right?

Definitely!! Gatherings like these will especially appeal to freshmen, who are mostly likely to be reunited with their high school friends who chose to attend another UC or CSU and join a Filipino student organization there. New members will also enjoy the camaraderie that Friendship Games offers. It is also the defining moment where they will also realize that they have a place with FAASSU.
